Not everyone is born with perfect teeth. The truth is that many people will need some sort of orthodontic treatment in their lifetime. How do you know if you’re one of those people? How do you know if your kiddo needs braces? Signs could range from bite problems, jaw pain, or just teeth that are out of place.

At Smith Orthodontics, we know many people need orthodontics, but they’re not sure exactly what they need or how long they will need it. That’s why we offer a free consultation and initial examination, so we can show you what you or your child needs to get that perfect smile. We’ll also let you know what braces or clear aligners can do for your oral health and overall health.

Does My Child Need to Get Braces?

You may think you have to wait until your child is a teenager to see if they need braces. This isn’t true! The American Association of Orthodontists recommends your child see an orthodontist by age 7. The sooner your child’s dental issues can be addressed, the better. By that age, many of the permanent teeth will be in, and we will be able to see whether your child will need treatment and what kind.

You can also look for signs that your child might need an orthodontist. Here are some things to watch for regarding your child’s oral health.

  • They suck their thumb or pacifier past age 2
  • Teeth don’t come together with a closed mouth
  • Teeth are crooked or crowded
  • Jaw clicks or makes other sounds
  • They breathe through their mouth
  • Biting tongue or cheek accidentally
  • They lost baby teeth early or late
  • Poor nutrition at an early age
  • Poor oral hygiene early
  • Genetic issues

Do I Need Braces, Too?

You may think that as an adult, it’s too late for you to get orthodontic treatment, but that’s not true at all! You have just as much of a right to the smile of your dreams as your child! In fact, more adults are opting for treatment today than ever, partly because of the great options available for adults.

Many adults would feel self-conscious about wearing braces or clear aligners, but today’s options make it easier and go beyond the “mouthful of metal” they expect. Clear braces and clear aligners make treatment possible with low-profile appliances that do just as well as metal braces without the harsh look. Braces for adults can alleviate the pain you may have had for years, from jaw pain to headaches. You may be surprised how beneficial braces or clear aligners can be!

How Do I Pay for Braces?

One of the biggest obstacles people see in getting braces treatment for themselves or their children is financing. How are they going to pay for braces or clear aligners? At Smith Orthodontics, we work to make your treatment affordable. We will work with you to determine how much your dental insurance might cover, and then we will help you figure out how to pay off the rest.

Smith Orthodontics starts by offering custom down payments, so you may get treatment started as soon as possible. We offer flexible, interest-free payment plans designed to fit your budget. What if you need more time to pay than the 1-2 years you’ll be in braces? We can offer extended payment plans to make your treatment even more affordable. You or your child can get that perfect smile easier than you think!
